About the opportunity

St Gemma’s Hospice is a Leeds-based charity providing expert care and support for local people with life-limiting and terminal illnesses. We offer care to patients and their carers in the Hospice’s In-Patient Unit, through the St Gemma’s Community Team and via Out-Patients.

Would you like a volunteer role supporting our patients? We are looking for Outpatient Support Volunteers on a Tuesday or Thursday afternoon for 2-3 hours a week. St Gemma’s Hospice Outpatients provide extra support to patients and their families if the patient chooses to remain at home during their illness. Service users can enjoy the friendly and therapeutic environment, access creative therapy activities, wellbeing, emotional support, appointments with specialist doctors and therapists.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Welcome patients on their arrival and help settle them in.
  • Help serve refreshment to patients.
  • Inform patients about the various activities on offer as an outpatient.
  • Stock up the kitchen supplies as required or directed.
  • Assist patients in completion of paperwork and online feedback.
  • Facilitate participation by patients in the various activities that are available.
  • Talk and read to patients.
  • Accompany patients in group work sessions (as requested).
  • Pay particular attention to new patients, or those who find it difficult to socialise, and equally respect patients' need for 'quiet time' and privacy.
  • Accompany patients to other parts of the Hospice as directed and required.
  • Communicate with staff and report any relevant information that patients have shared.
  • Carry out administration tasks as requested, eg photocopying, post room runs, faxing.
  • Assist with the general setting up and tidying of the room.
