Volunteer Role Title: Education Support Facilitator

Location: Comber, Northern Ireland
Time Commitment: 4-8 hours a week
Role Overview
NeurodiversityUK is seeking a passionate and knowledgeable volunteer to support families navigating the education system for neurodivergent children.
You will act as a guide, advocate, and source of reassurance for families experiencing challenges within educational settings.
Key Responsibilities
Parent Support & Guidance
· Provide one-to-one support to parents navigating the SEND system
· Explain processes such as statutory assessment, statementing/EHCPs, and IEPs
· Help parents understand their rights and options within the education system
· Offer emotional support and reassurance during challenging situations
Education Advocacy
· Support parents in preparing for school meetings (e.g. reviews, SEN meetings)
· Help parents organise key documents and evidence
· Provide guidance on communicating effectively with schools
· Where appropriate, attend meetings alongside families (optional)
IEP & Support Planning
· Assist parents in understanding and reviewing IEPs or support plans
· Suggest practical, neurodiversity-affirming strategies for use in school
· Help identify gaps in provision and support needs
Problem-Solving & Liaison
· Support families experiencing difficulties with schools or local authorities
· Help de-escalate conflicts and promote collaborative approaches
· Signpost to legal, advocacy, or specialist services where needed
Record Keeping
· Maintain clear, confidential notes of support provided
· Track common challenges to inform service development
Person Specification
Essential:
· Experience or strong knowledge of SEND processes (e.g. SEN, EHCPs/Statements, IEPs)
· Background in education, psychology, social care, or related field
· Excellent communication and listening skills
· Empathetic, non-judgemental, and supportive approach
· Ability to explain complex systems in a clear, accessible way
Desirable:
· Previous experience as a SENCo, teacher, classroom assistant, or advocate
· Knowledge of neurodivergent profiles (autism, ADHD, PDA)
· Experience supporting families or working in a charity setting
