About the opportunity

Purpose of the Role:

To bring the joy of animal care to adults with learning disabilities by supporting them in looking after chickens, and potentially other smaller/larger animals in the future. This role promotes confidence, responsibility, and wellbeing through meaningful, practical activities. Caring for animals can have therapeutic benefits—helping reduce stress, build confidence, and encourage a sense of responsibility and wellbeing.

Skills & Qualities:

• A love for animals and a patient, supportive attitude.

• Some experience with pets or farm animals would be helpful but not essential.

• Comfortable with light physical tasks, such as cleaning enclosures and carrying feed.

• Ability to inspire confidence and enjoyment in others

• Friendly, and reliable team member

Training & Support:

Full induction provided, including Safeguarding and disability awareness, Mental Capacity Act, Lone Working, and UK GDPR & Data Protection, plus ongoing support. Role-specific training will be provided to ensure volunteers feel confident and competent.

Future Opportunities:

As our animal care activities grow, there may be chances to work with other smaller/larger animals in addition to chickens. Volunteers who are interested in expanding their skills will have the opportunity to learn and support these developments.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • To bring the joy of animal care to adults with learning disabilities
  • Assist with feeding, grooming and caring for chickens, and other small animals.
  • Encourage participation in daily animal care routines.
  • Help maintain clean, safe, and comfortable living spaces for the animals.
  • Share enthusiasm for animal welfare and outdoor activities.
  • Support the creation of a calm, inclusive environment for individuals and animals.
  • Follow safeguarding, confidentiality, and health & safety guidance.
