About the opportunity

Provide strategic leadership, align and monitor delivery plans, oversee financial performance and budgets, ensure legal, regulatory and statutory compliance, and maintain the highest standards of governance as a Company and Charity Director.

ABOUT THE BOARD

Shelter, Campaign for the Homeless Northern Ireland Limited is a Company Limited by Guarantee in Northern Ireland and registered as a Charity with the Charity Commission of Northern Ireland.  The Company Members of Shelter NI delegate responsibility for strategic leadership and oversight of the organisation to the Management Committee.

The Management Committee is made up of not less than five and not more than fifteen members of the Company elected by the members at each Annual General Meeting (AGM).  The officers of the Company are the Chairman, Vice-chairman, Secretary and Treasurer and are elected by the Committee following each AGM. 

The Management Committee (Board) of Shelter NI is responsible for oversight of the implementation of the organisational strategic plan. The Shelter NI Board meets approximately six times a year, including for the AGM. Meetings are a combination of face-to-face, hybrid and online meetings and last approximately two hours.

We are now seeking three additional members' applications to join the Shelter NI Board in line with the Company’s Articles of Association.

SKILLS & EXPERTISE

We are seeking to fill a current skills gap in 

Background in the Housing / Homelessness Sector

  • Significant housing or homelessness sector experience

  • A good understanding of the current UK/NI housing/homelessness landscape

  • A strong understanding of and commitment to homelessness prevention

Fundraising

  • Experienced fundraiser in the charity sector

  • Strong understanding of the challenges of fundraising in the sector

  • Knowledge of reporting requirements for grant awarding bodies

Financial and Corporate Governance

  • Senior management team or Board level experience

  • Accounting or Audit qualification/experience

  • Experience in organisational Risk Management

  • Knowledge of Charity reporting requirements 

In addition, candidates should meet the following expertise and skillset:

  • A working knowledge of Northern Irish charity and company law or compliance, or legal frameworks in similar jurisdictions and a willingness to learn more about Northern Irish charity law.

  • Strong strategic and analytical skills.

  • A strong understanding of and commitment to homelessness prevention.

  • Ability to utilise IT software to join meetings and access papers.

We are particularly interested in attracting candidates from Derry City and Strabane District Council and Fermanagh and Omagh District Council areas, where our key projects are based.  Candidates can be based in any location as there is scope for online meetings. Please bear in mind that travel to the Charity’s headquarters in Belfast may be required from time to time. 

Members are appointed on a voluntary basis.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Provide strategic direction as required, ensuring delivery plans are aligned, and monitoring performance.
  • Review the financial performance of Shelter NI, with regard to the overall budget
  • Ensure that Shelter NI complies with all legal and regulatory requirements
  • Ensure that Shelter NI’s governance is of the highest possible standard
  • Ensure compliance to all statutory obligations of a Company Director and registered Charity Director.
